Looking for CCS Type 1 to Type 2 fast charge adaptor pinout

Thu Jan 09, 2020 11:44 pm

Would like to fast charge US model in Europe.
Ready made cables are from USD 877. That is near USD 500 more then price of it's components.

It seems that I would be able to do it myself if I have it's pinout.

Looking for pinout of CCS Type 1 to Type 2 fast charge adaptor.

At the moment it seems that buying type 2 socket USD 160[1] and type 1 CCS plug USD 142 [2] and 50 cm of wire is much cheaper then USD 877 [3]

So my inquiry
A. Looking for pinout of CCS Type 1 to Type 2 fast charge adaptor.
B. Probably I can use existing type 2 to type 1 cable along with DC separate cable. Is there plug sockets only for 2 wire DC part? What is there type\name?

I don't see anything on Amazon nearly as expensive as you mentioned. The Bolt uses CCS, which as far as I know is the same world wide so I'm confused about what you mean with Type 1 and Type 2, but I'm not an electrician. The Bolt should have come with the granny (wall socket) cable or you can order one. You would need the correct adapter for the wall outlet in your country of course for a few dollars. Then there is the Level 2 amount of power, which here in the US is 240v like an electric clothes dryer. On the car side, both of those connect as the same SAE J1772 plug. Both of these methods are AC power and the charger built into the car converts it to DC for the battery.

Then there is the actual CCS which is the high power DC fast charging, which uses the extra two pins on the Bolt if it is equipped with that option. Those pins are covered by a small flip down cover. As DC, the car doesn't have to convert that from AC and it goes straight to the battery so it's fast plus a lot more current.

However, if it was me I'd spend the money on a known brand cable/adapter. There is the pilot signalling, the latching system that must work properly for the signal, the correct gauge of cable, etc. This is a lot of electricity and if not done properly you're likely to put yourself, car, or home at risk.

"type 1" and "type 2" are the sockets. Europe has one socket pin-out, North America has the other. (The protocols are the same worldwide - only the socket is different.)

Europe has a much better plug, IMO ; it allows 3-phase charging to the vehicle (but doesn't require it - single phase is still just fine).
