This is a quote from the GM press release ont he Chevrolet Bolt EV from the Shanghai Motor Show:

Lightweight materials – including aluminum, magnesium, carbon fiber and woven mesh – add to the design while keeping down the curb weight

Looks like GM is now talking about lightweighting the Bolt which also makes it less susceptible to corrosion and rust!

It only makes sense that the most advanced mass-produced EV would be built with advanced materials... but it's still good to hear them say it!

The Tesla Model S uses aluminum extensively due to weight savings, even thought it's more costly than steel.
Tesla stated the Model 3 is unlikely to use as much aluminum as a percentage.

It seems unlikely that GM will use aluminum widely due to cost and complexity of manufacturing (needs to be welded and bonded differently), it may be they use it for housing the motor and electronics to avoid corrosion, but unlikely to be used in frame/unibody.

GM may use composite (not carbon fibre) panels for the doors/hood as they did with Saturn.

I like my Smart ED, and the composite panels are light and not easily dented.
