Works for me, but given <1% of the market actually chooses an EV,

Which "the market" are you talking about? Not global, over 1%. Not the USA, over 1%.

Maybe Canada?

USA

FY2016, 17.6 millions cars & trucks were sold. Of those, 159,333 were EVs:

<1% of new cars purchased were EVs. The Model 3 could move 2017 numbers >1%.

2016 was 2016. So far in 2017:

http://insideevs.com/monthly-plug-in-sales-scorecard/

104863 plug in vehicles

http://online.wsj.com/mdc/public/page/2_3022-autosales.html

9867276 cars, SUVs and light trucks.

Or 1.06% of vehicles.

Perhaps "about 1%"?

Cars is even more above 1%.

Plug in cars to total cars (Leaving out SUVs and light trucks) is 2.51% EVs

Maybe "less than 5%"?

Back in June, I made the comment based on 2016 data. Who knows what the future holds for the rest of 2017 & beyond. Feel free to leave out SUVs and light trucks / spin sales figures any way you please. Whatever floats your boat.

EVs have been growing market share. At some point in time, you can no longer truthfully say that EVs <1% of the vehicle market.

Looks like 2017 might be that year. The future is of course unknown.

It is perhaps nitpicking to point out that EV cars are well over 1% of total car sales, as car sales don't include light trucks and SUVs. However, please be precise. This statement has not be true for while:

<1% of new cars purchased were EVs

When in actual fact 2.5% of cars sold are EVs. While a car is a vehicle, not all vehicles are cars.

"Perhaps" nitpicking?

Again: Back in June, I made the comment based on 2016 data. Who knows what the future holds for the rest of 2017 & beyond. Hopefully, the Model 3 may be the EV that actually does change the game.

We're on the same side. Really.
