6 Months Later, 107 miles each way to work, 120F Desert Heat

I thought I'd post an update on my Bolt life, now that I've been driving it for 6 months. At first the thought of owning an EV made me nervous for several reasons: My drive into the office for my in-office days is about 107 miles each way, over hilly terrain and through mountain passes. I...

    Extreme Desert Heat

The Bolt is the first time I've leased a car because I wanted to hedge against technology and concerns over our high temperatures. I have solar and am not on a TOU plan. Prior to the temperatures climbing up, I had the Bolt on immediate charging and plugged it in whenever it was in the garage...

    Extreme Desert Heat

So I suppose the best course of action is to not allow the Bolt to sit in the hot garage plugged in and charged to 100%, but keep it on hill too reserved and plugged in and on immediate charge so it has plenty of electricity to cool? I have heard that charging when the temperature is high is...

    Extreme Desert Heat

I posted some of this in a trip report I wrote, but I'm now getting a bit confused and am not sure what to do. I live in the Palm Springs area. Our temperatures are already over 100F, and now up around 105F. Over the summer, they will get upwards of 121F on some rare days. According to the...

Trip Report - My First 250 Round Trip Commute to Work

Actually the manual says that the car should be plugged in when it's above 90F. Does this mean is should be in a charge mode or not in a charge mode?

Trip Report - My First 250 Round Trip Commute to Work

Thank you very much for the information. I've changed my settings to turn on Hill Top Reserve when the car is at home, and also set up charing to start at 12:00 AM and go to 6:00 AM which is when it will be at the coolest outside. I should still be able to get to Carlsbad and with the top up...

Trip Report - My First 250 Round Trip Commute to Work

I usually have about 100 miles or more when I arrive at work. My paranoia stems from fear of not having the range to get back because I drive over mountains and now that summer is here will need to start running the AC for at least half of the drive home. Hence why I top up to 80% in Carlsbad.

Trip Report - My First 250 Round Trip Commute to Work

I know there's a DCFC at the McDonalds off the 10 in I think Banning that I could use in a pinch. At home, I have L2, 40 Amps, so charge fairly quickly. I think that considering I leave work by 3 or 3:30 for the drive home and normally walk in the door between 6:35 and 6:45 that makes me...

Trip Report - My First 250 Round Trip Commute to Work

I have to let it be known that I am just chicken about driving on the 74. I think going to Carlsbad would be better because it's the inside lane against the mountain, but coming home in the dark with nothing but a drop on the driver side and cars up my butt because I'm driving slowly scares me...

Trip Report - My First 250 Round Trip Commute to Work

Gary - Your posting was extremely helpful. I had no idea that the manual recommended keeping it plugged in when the temperature was above 90F/23C, which is nearly every day here in Palm Springs from late May through Mid November. I had wondered whether it was good or bad to keep it plugged in...

Trip Report - My First 250 Round Trip Commute to Work

Something did happen yesterday afternoon when I got back from running errands. It was about 106F out and my garage is not cooled. I plugged in the car to my JuiceBox (40amp) and a short while later received a message that charging had been interrupted. I went out the garage and the Bolt was...

Trip Report - My First 250 Round Trip Commute to Work

I thought I'd provide an update since it's been a while. I'm still commuting every week from Palm Springs to Carlsbad and topping up in Carlsbad has not been a problem, In theory, my Bolt, Faraday, says he's got enough juice for the return trip, but I still prefer to top up. Not quite sure why...

Trip Report - My First 250 Round Trip Commute to Work

There's something to be said for peace of mind. Being 125 miles away from home and for business, there is a benefit to knowing that on my way to my hotel I can stop for 30 minutes and charge top up enough to not worry about the drive home the next day. I prefer doing it right after work my first...

Trip Report - My First 250 Round Trip Commute to Work

Spoke to the Hilton Gardens today, as I suspected they can't match the rate I get at the La Quinta, but we are talking about a 3-star vs. 2-star property. I'll have to content myself with charging at the Hilton, or enjoy a Starbucks, while I charge at the EVgo. Hopefully, eventually, the La...

GPS - How Much Power Consumption?

I love my new Bolt, but I can't say that I like Apple Maps. It lacks just too many features. I much prefer my stand-alone Garmin. I'm hesitant to use it because I'm not sure how much power it would draw through the cigarette lighter outlet. Does anyone have any idea?
