    Winter Tires

Please let us know how they work out. I got Goodyear WeatherReady tires back in March at the tail end of winter. They are in a similar “winter-rated all-season” market niche. I only drove briefly in snow for a day while on a trip to Canada. They seemed to do well but I’ll have more experience...

Recargo's DCFC Station Contract on 101 in Central California

FYI, I posted a somewhat related article today about the charging site status of another of the CEC grantees — EV Connect — which is building more DC charging along CA 99. EV Connect built DC chargers at 3 of 11 CEC grant sites; scrambles to add 6 more...

DCFC: Difficult "handshake" to initiate charge

The “hold up the cable” issue with the Bolt is a mechanical issue with the motorized clamp at the top of the car inlet trying to grip onto the top of the cable plug. If the plug sags down at an angle then the lock mechanism isn’t able to grab ahold of the plug. The car notices this and reports...

Electrify America rolls out new app and prices

I just wrote up a status report on the rollout of California sites versus the rest of the country. https://electricrevs.com/2019/06/13/with-over-200-sites-open-electrify-america-lags-behind-in-california/

Electrify America rolls out new app and prices

I’m curious about whether it will be possible to successfully initiate a payment using the phone app on charging dispensers that are not succeeding with using a physical credit card.

    DCQC charging rates

Oops, sorry about misreading that. But, that implies that your 15 miles of driving was at slower city rates which wouldn’t necessarily warm the battery faster than 15 minutes of highway driving. So, yes, I still think it is quite likely a cold battery issue. I know you’ve been around the block...

Android App & OBDII for more battery info?

See this document for details on how to set up OBD monitoring for the Bolt EV on an Android (or iOS) device: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sY5n8WFu52U6a4_mg3MdcGcmDk3scAP8_muSy-BlXPc/htmlview

    DCQC charging rates

Driving for only 15 minutes will have very little effect on the battery pack temperature, as noted in the article. You would have to drive at faster highway speeds like 70-75 mph (20+ kW output) for over an hour to really have much useful battery warming. It would help if the Bolt was able to...

DCFC Stations Bakersfield to the Sierra Nevada East Side Coming

It’s linked as a resource on the January 28, 2019 press release at: https://www.electrifyamerica.com/news-updates When it was first posted it on January 28 it had multiple errors. I pointed them out and they removed it. Then they fixed it and relinked it a couple of weeks ago and then it...

DCFC Stations Bakersfield to the Sierra Nevada East Side Coming

Here is the latest version of the Electrify America Cycle 1 map. It is a corrected version of a map that was first released in late January of 2019.

    DCQC charging rates

Very likely due to a cold battery. And remember, the battery temperature changes slowly so it might be 45F outside when you charge but the pack itself may be colder from spending the night at 30F or whatever. In any case, if you look at the graph in my article about cold weather charging you...

Update on CalTrans District 9 (Sierra Nevada East Side) DC Fast Charger Program

I believe the US 395 sites are still planned to be built and open by the end of this year. Electrify America recently released new Cycle 1 map artwork which omitted them along with several on US-101 on the northern CA coast. I believe those changes were an error and the map has since been...

Request Battery Heating/conditioning To accelerate fast charge in cold climate

I agree that some kind of user-initiated battery pack pre-heating might be a useful feature for speeding up fast charges during the winter. I wrote an article about these issues that includes a graph showing the Bolt’s DC charging rate at different pack temperatures. It also has a link to the...
