Recargo's DCFC Station Contract on 101 in Central California

Plugshare shows DCFC stations at both the south- and north-bound rest areas near Camp Roberts (near Bradley). The report says they are solar powered and not available after dark. Currently, the northbound is reported as not working. The Plugshare note says the following: Has anyone used them?

    Bike racks

Updating this comment. The latest (third?) version of the SportWing now works just fine. They simplified the base of the "wing," which increases the height of the wheel hooks off the ground. The same bike (700C wheels) now has 9" of ground clearance. Even though I also have a Thule Helium rack...

DCFC: Difficult "handshake" to initiate charge

I learned that Eric Way goes by News Coulomb. I found he has some discussion of the "handshake" issue on this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5tYyyPs7Sc&list=PL97TZj0rhz2DiGu-29EFE3QucpLxxROvp&index=19&t=0s My question remains. Does GM have a fix? Is it a warranty issue?

DCFC: Difficult "handshake" to initiate charge

Thank you Paul. Do you mean chevybolt.org? I looked there, and see yours and others references to him, but not his posts. If it's easy for you, could you point me towards the post you're thinking of? Thanks a million. Peter

DCFC: Difficult "handshake" to initiate charge

A couple times I've now had difficulty starting a DCFC (Level 3) fast charge. Talking to technical support from both Recharge and Electrify America, I learned to lift up the cable (close to the car port) to help make that connection. So far, the lifting enabled the 'handshake' to occur. I...

Bolt EV problem with liquid-cooled CCS cables

I recharged my early Bolt (Oct 2016 build date) at the Recargo Prunedale station. I was fortunate enough to have a Recargo tech there at the time. Although my car had no problem, he said that Bolts tended to have trouble latching, and to hold up the cable and lift up the CCS head when starting.

    Global warming ...

Here's a nice discussion of what we can do, giving the relative magnitude of the benefit of the changes we make. The key takeaway thought: "The four actions that most substantially decrease an individual's carbon footprint are: eating a plant-based diet, avoiding air travel, living car-free...

    What MPGe are you getting?

Thanks for posting. The MyChevy app reports total miles (16,686) and lifetime 3.7 miles/kWh. FuelEconomy.gov provides this conversion: 1 gallon of gasoline=33.7 kWh. Using that, I calculate 125 MPGe. I estimate my driving is 90% freeway, and I typically stay below 70 mph. Most of the use is in...

(Generic) news of DCFC in Calif

I successfully charged at a Recargo station in Prunedale Nov 20th. Nice to cruise up to six (6!) chargers. I look forward to them installing more along 101.

Effect of revised NAFTA on EV's

According to this link, 20% of the content of the Bolt is USA/Canada and 61% is Korea. https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.dot.gov/files/documents/2018_aala_alpha_06262018.pdf

Effect of revised NAFTA on EV's

Has anyone heard of the effect of the revised NAFTA agreement on Bolts? The traction battery and motor are made in Korea... From this article: https://www.citylab.com/transportation/2018/10/where-americas-charge-towards-electric-vehicles-stands-today/572857/ The new United...

Electric Auto Association Petitions for Mammoth Lake Public Chargers

I asked about plans for a public charger at the Mono Lake Committee, and they reported that the Chamber of Commerce is working on installing one. Perhaps at the Solar Pavilion, which a quick search found a discussion. Here's the first paragraph (dated July 5th, 2018): "Exciting times are...

Electric Auto Association Petitions for Mammoth Lake Public Chargers

That charger desert on 395 extends all the way north to South Lake Tahoe. There's no public Level 2 or 3 in that entire 350-mile-long reach from South Lake Tahoe to Mohave. In contrast, Nevada DOT has a free Level 3 charger in Hawthorne... I'm heading to Lee Vining tomorrow, and called two...

EV Road Tripping: Bakersfield Bolt to Yosemite via US 395 and the "East Side"

Thanks Paul. We were in a similar quandary, seeking to drive from near Sacramento to Mammoth Lakes and Tuolumne Meadows this summer. Coming from the north (as opposed to your trip from the south), we considered using our Bolt. However, 395 is a charger desert south of Lake Tahoe. We considered...

Best Charging Regimen for Low Mileage and Hot Weather

I posted discussion of an academic paper on extending Li-ion battery life here: https://www.mychevybolt.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=8080&p=31226#p31226 They suggest charging "as late as possible." That is, not not routinely charging it. They argue for charging before you use it... as late as...

    Hot Garage

My solution to keeping the battery cool in a hot garage is to use a "Lux WIN100 Heating & Cooling Programmable Outlet Thermostat" ($38) which I set to turn on when the temperature is above 90 degrees F. I plug the GM 110V EVSE into that and the car. I set the car to "Immediate Charge," at 8...

    Bike racks

I bought a Highland SportWing. The design has changed, and it's no longer possible to get the riser shank. It's too bad, as the bike rides low -- the tires on my road bike (700) were 5" off level ground (with the hitch being 9 1/2" off the ground). Hence, it can no longer be recommended for a Bolt.

    Bike racks

The Curt rack (11457, and sold by GM) is rated for 100 pounds tongue weight, 1000 pounds trailer weight. The Draw-Tite (aka Cequent) 24956 is rated for 200 pounds, 2000 pounds trailer weight. In addition, the Curt installation manual has this note (in red): WARNING: WE RECOMMEND THE USE...

Charge: As soon as possible, or as late as possible?

Here's more from the paper: 6. Conclusion and implications While latest studies on EV user behavior indicate that users prefer frequent and full recharging (AFAP), changing this charging behavior can tremendously extend battery life. Based on simulation results built on a comprehensive battery...
