I am now tempted to buy a new toy (like I need an excuse!) : a laser thermometer.

Can anyone recommend a decent-to-good one at a fairly inexpensive price? (I wouldn't mind a fantastic one for cheap, but I'm not holding my breath!)

Thx!

I've had pretty good luck w/the cheap tools offered at Harbor Freight. The one offered there costs only $18.99 and gets pretty good reviews. See: http://www.harborfreight.com/infrared-thermometer-93984.html

If you use their digital coupons you can alsos get a free "gift" with your purchase too. Can't count the number of 25 ft tape measures, LED flashlights and various other gifts I got from them lying around. LOL! See: http://www.harborfreight.com/digitalsavings.html

Lots of them available on Amazon. I use a Harbor Freight one myself, in the kitchen (there's your rationale for buying one).

With the laser thermometers there's a couple of key things to keep in mind:

The laser is there merely to help you aim at the area you are measuring. The alignment of the laser is not always super accurate and as a result, the actual area you are measuring could be several inches above or below the red-dot. The further away you are, the greater the offset, obviously. Also these are typically IR thermometers which measure surface temp of an object. So when you are measuring the temp of air coming out of a vent, what you are really measuring is how cold the air-duct is, or the vent vanes.
