The question is how often will RWD not provide enough regen stopping power? If 99% of the time, RWD provides adequate stopping power via regen, then the slight loss in efficiency is in the noise. If, on the other had, RWD only provides enough for 20% of the time, that's clearly not good enough.

From the previous comment, most modern EVs are programmed to max out regen at about 0.3g. It is uncommon for one to want to stop much faster. It would seem that this modest deceleration should be easy to provide via the rear wheels.

Without running any numbers, or going into any deep analysis, my intuition tells me that RWD regen would be >90% as efficient as FWD regen. And that's good enough for me. Given the other benefits of RWD, I would still choose it over FWD.
