How do you get these icons to show on your apple Carplay screen?

Have you checked the CarPlay app on your phone to see if it has some display options that might configure these icons?

Those icons on the side indicate that you have launched those apps during the current CarPlay session. If you haven't done a phone call or you aren't listening to music on the phone, then they won't show up.

It is simple. You have to update your phone to iOS 10.3 or higher.

Wow, using Android due to costs but am jealous of the amount of screen is actually used by iOS.

Yes, Apple added those side icons to CarPlay beginning with iOS 10.3 and higher. Once you upgrade to the latest operating system, they will automatically appear when you run CarPlay.
