There was a quote from, I believe, some Saudi oil bigwig to the effect...

The stone age didn't end from lack of stones. The bronze age didn't end from lack of bronze. The oil age won't end from lack of oil
 
It's not just the engines. We now have cars with continuously variable transmissions and 9 (nine!) speed transmissions attempting to keep the engine running in its most efficient RPM band. Not to mention hybrids, which retain almost all the complexity of the ICE while adding the costs of electric motors and batteries.

Battery costs and charging infrastructure still need to mature, but in general I'd agree that yes, the halcyon days of the Internal Combustion Engine will almost certainly be drawing to a close sometime in the next decade or so.
