    CT - Lease advice appreciated

Leased from Allen Gwynn Chevrolet, Glendale, CA. In addition, we got $2500 in California state money (equivalent to about $69/month) outside of the lease agreement. So effective payment less than $300/month I always suggest getting quote for a zero driveaway lease, sales tax included. That...

    CT - Lease advice appreciated

359 plus tax is too high for an LT, that's true. Keep shopping. We paid 350 including tax for a Premier with options, 15K miles, zero down, zero driveaway. But a Bolt is going to be more than a Leaf because they are not the same class of car. A 2016 Leaf is obsolete by comparison, they can...

EVgo DC chargers were horrible up until the beginning of 2018. They're still not perfect, but improvement is being made.

I used one yesterday...in Palm Springs, California. I live about 140 miles from there and spent the weekend. I needed some juice to get home. I arrived with about 90 miles range remaining. Could not have been easier. I tapped my EVGO card and it charged 99 Amps at 360 V for 30 minutes...

    "Full" battery levels dropping daily

Right. You can see that a huge portion of the energy goes to heating the cabin as opposed to moving the car. That's why I have always said that a heat pump should have been made as an available option. Yes, yes, I KNOW a heat pump doesn't do well when it's very cold, but a heat pump...

    "Full" battery levels dropping daily

I have said in the past that the basic rule of thumb for EVs is to cut the EPA range in half, and that's the "I don't need to think about it, even in cold weather, even with several years of battery fade, I can go that far" range. So for a Bolt, that's about 120 miles, in Massachusetts winter...

EVgo DC chargers were horrible up until the beginning of 2018. They're still not perfect, but improvement is being made.

Exactly. And in my opinion is more important to get two people 80 miles than to get one person 160. If nobody else is waiting, one can do as many half hours as he wants, but if someone else is out of juice, he should get a chance at the charger. The other observation I would make is that...

EVgo DC chargers were horrible up until the beginning of 2018. They're still not perfect, but improvement is being made.

30 Minute rule was still in effect a few weeks back in Los Angeles and I fully support it. I needed some charge to get on my way and it made no sense for me to need to wait for some guy to top off. And what if there had been someone already in line? Or two? If you cannot depend on...

    "Full" battery levels dropping daily

That's the rationalization people used, but it's not really the point. Yes, heat pumps don't work at very low temps, but there is still the option to use a resistive pre-heater when the temps are sufficiently low and the result is in all cases more efficient than using resistive heating...

    "Full" battery levels dropping daily

You definitely should get an L2 charger, but even a portrable 3 kW class unit will replenish what you use each day in about 8 hours. A 6 kW unit will solve you problems completely and is the way to go. A 50 mile round trip is a piece of cake for a Bolt .

    "Full" battery levels dropping daily

When the Bolt was firest announced, I was critical of the fact that it has a cheesey resistive heater rather than a heat pump. It should have provided a heat pump, at least as an available option, to mitigate just this situation.

Has anybody tried these 'portable' EVSEs ??

The Aerovironment Turbo Cord draws 2 Watt on standby, 4 while operating. I would think this is representative and not worth bothering plugging/unplugging (0.05 kWh/day ) Most people have fixed EVSE units and don't bother disconnecting while not in use.

New tech battery for our 2017 bolts in the future?

In some cases they do offer "crate engines" which are usually high performance replacements. But using one is not generally economical...it's something people do because they WANT to do it and don't mind spending the money. Similarly, an automaker might offer an upgrade battery, but it's...

    Leaving Bolt for 3 months

Don't leave it fully charged. Half charge or slightly less would be good. Put the 12 V battery on a "battery tender"

    My bolt is completely dead

Jump the regular 12 V battery

    ~~ This could change EVERYTHING! .. ~~

Yes exactly and this is very routine. Utilities set time of use rates to influence people to charge when iits advantageous. Some utilities already provide discounts for those willing to accept forced shutdowns of air conditioning during times of High load. All that makes good sense...

Optimum garage temperature for your EV

No it does not. I'm talking about battery charging efficiency which is the only part that heats the battery itself. Inefficiency in the electronics is a separate matter. I am talking about the battery alone. Overall charging efficiency is in the range of 90% typically, which includes both...

Optimum garage temperature for your EV

The final temperature is likely to be about the same either way. The battery is v.ry well insulated I'm confident, so the temperature rise depends only on the thermal capacity of the battery pack and the energy loss In other words, if the battery is, for example, 95% efficient during charge...

Optimum garage temperature for your EV

    That is perfectly fine.

    ~~ This could change EVERYTHING! .. ~~

Because it wears the battery out. If it were without cost to the life of your car, sure why not. But the Bolt battery, for example, carries an 80,000 mile warranty. This represents approximately 80,000/200 = 400 equivalent full charge/discharge cycles. If one uses, for example, 1000 kWh...

EVgo has the right idea, just doesn't go far enough

They could (and should!) post a sign asking people to remove their cars promptly when charging was complete. Perhaps also a text message letting them know the status. I believe this particular guy was a brand new EV owner and was clueless. It's an office complex and the idiot probably had...
